GMO Free

There is a growing concern over genetically modified organisms (GMOs) appearing in food. A growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights. Sea Fare Pacific has gone to great lengths to ensure that these soups and sauces contain only GMO-free ingredients.
Gluten Free

All seafood is naturally free of gluten. Each ingredient in these pouches has been carefully chosen and is free of gluten. Our processing and packaging facility, however, is not certified..

Our Story
Sea Fare Pacific was born out of Mike Babcock’s passion to provide people with high-quality, sustainable pacific albacore tuna that truly tastes like mom’s home-canned tuna.  As a native Oregonian, and founder and owner of Oregon Seafoods, LLC, Mike began Sea Fare Pacific in early 2011 after extensive research to define the brand and products that ultimately created our fabulous line of gourmet albacore tuna that are packed in their own natural juices with no preservatives or fillers.

As an avid sport fisherman, Mike conceived the idea of selling pacific albacore tuna products that tastes liked mom’s home-canned tuna after learning just how undervalued tuna was while spending time with fishermen who were looking for opportunity.   Mike was also familiar with the unmatched taste of home canned tuna, since he and his family and friends often canned their own tuna.  And if you’ve canned your own tuna, you know that most of the popular commercial brands that you can buy at the grocery store don’t come anywhere near the quality and flaky, sumptuous, full  flavor of home-canned tuna. That’s when Mike realized that if he could take the tuna and process it like home-canned tuna, he could create a product that everybody would want.  At the same time, he could add value to tuna, and help the fisherman.

Fully committed in his new endeavor to support certified sustainable Northwest Fishing families, Mike then met with  fishing veterans, Rick Goche , F/V Peso II, and Mark and Cynthia Schneider,  F/V Sea Princess, who urged Mike to use an earth-friendly pouch for his tuna instead of a can because they felt it would provide a better product after doing some initial testing at the Oregon State University Seafood Research Laboratory in Astoria, Oregon.

After much research of his own, Mike followed their advice and invested in Toyo Jidoki pouch machines.  He then started working with Mark Whitham at the OSU Seafood Research Lab to develop recipe’s and the Seafood Processors Association to develop cook times.

Mike has also invested and participated in numerous labs and food groups including the consumer sensory tests at the Food Innovation Center in Portland, Oregon where staff did an excellent job setting up a test to get feedback on some of the recipes and packaging materials.  With that invaluable information, Mike has been able to refine Sea Fare Pacific’s gourmet flavored offerings, and move ahead with the brand and package development.  The result of all of this hard work and dedication to create a superior pacific albacore tuna product is what you see here on the web site.

But starting businesses where there was none to begin with is nothing new to Mike.  He has a long, solid track record of being able to develop a venture from the ground up.  His last major start up with no prior experience was in wood products in 1993.  That business, Northwest Fir Products (eventually Goshen Forest Products), has grown and evolved to become a successful company that has stood the test of time 18 years later.

After growing up on a farm in Brownsville, Oregon, Mike had also been drawn to possible opportunities in the food industry for quite some time.  But he says his seafood business emerged almost by an accident after becoming a partner in a retail fish shop in Coos Bay, Oregon.  Looking for ways to help the fish shop, Mike says he founded Oregon Seafoods, LLC after deciding that a processing facility could help the business.  Fully invested in a million dollar seafood plant in Coos Bay, Mike sold his remaining shares of the saw mill to dedicate all of his efforts to the growth and success of Sea Fare Pacific.

Word is spreading quickly about how Sea Fare Pacific’s fresh, albacore tuna products in a pouch are superior on every level.  Success that Mike Babcock proudly embraces as he knows it will have far reaching effects for many American families.  “Sea Fare Pacific is going to have a big impact for fishermen and fishing communities as we grow.  It just doesn’t make sense to send our premium pacific caught fish to another country for processing when we need to support family’s here in the US,” Mike declared.  “We are in the process of putting together the team of people that will help in launching this brand and ultimately insuring its success from the guy in the fillet room to the person delivering the finished package.  There are many key people along the way.  As our people and business grows it will get to a point well beyond my capabilities.  That will be an exciting time, as I become less, the right people will be in place to take this business where it will ultimately end up employing and feeding a lot of American families with healthy, fresh pacific albacore tuna."

Questions, Answers, & Links
What are the health benefits of your albacore?
Our wild-caught pacific albacore have no mercury concerns, and are much higher in Omega-3’s, natural fatty acids that protect human heart and brain functions, then most of the popular commercial tuna brands in the grocery store. Sea Fare Pacific albacore is also a great source of high-quality, lean protein.  Our earth-friendly pouch also makes eating this super food easy at home or on the go. Just tear the pouch open and enjoy our 100% white meat albacore in its natural juices and oils!
What about mercury? Isn’t albacore higher in mercury than other tuna?
Oregon State University recently addressed this question. Its findings showed that  troll-caught albacore tuna that were caught off our west coast have much lower mercury levels than the older, larger fish caught off the Asian coast that are used for most of the supermarket brand tunas. Unfortunately, many of the past reported results that show large tuna can exceed the FDA limit, don’t make any distinction between the larger species caught off the foreign coastlines, and our smaller west coast tuna. For example, a recent FDA study showed that canned albacore from common commercial brands had a higher mercury levels than canned “light” tuna. This is, in part, because the albacore in common brands are larger fish caught in the open Pacific, whereas “light” tuna is often the smaller skipjack species. Moreover, the recent research at Oregon State University that did make a distinction between the two species concluded that the mercury levels in the pacific albacore were well below mandated action levels for the U.S. FDA (1.0 ug/g  methylmercury) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s mandated action level of 0.5 ug/g total mercury.  That’s why we are proud to tout our superior fish at Sea Fare Pacific as a highly nutritious choice with no mercury concerns.  Here are two great links to read more about the OSU research project:
Tuna Goes to Market
What are the benefits of seafood in a pouch rather than a can?
First, you can forget about the mess of draining oils or water, with our earth-friendly pouch, you can simply tear the seal and enjoy. You can also feel good knowing that our seafood in a pouch is better for the environment! It was an easy decision for us to create an unprecedented environmentally-friendly pouch for seafood when we learned that we could ensure the pouches were BPA-free,they utilized less energy and resources to produce, and actually kept the fish fresher than a can. Our decision was a win-win-win, and we hope you think so too.
What makes this fish taste so much better?
One taste and we are sure you will agree that Sea Fare Pacific tastes like Mom’s home canned tuna.  The light, mild flavor of pacific albacore is unmatched. Our wild-caught tuna is packed in its natural oils and juices with no preservatives or fillers–pure and simple 100% white meat albacore!  And because albacore caught off the west coast have a higher body fat content than the older counterparts caught off the Asian coast, they stay naturally moist without having to add water or other fillers when canned or in our case, hand packed into our convenient and earth-friendly pouch.
Why don’t we find more tuna like Sea Fare Pacific in our supermarkets?
Most of the popular commercial brands import less expensive, older, long line caught and net caught albacore from other countries where labor is less expensive and standards are less restrictive. Sea Fare Pacific adheres to stringent standards that support certified sustainable fishing practices and at the same time supports and protects Pacific Northwest fishing families. We process and pack only high quality troll-caught albacore, and keep the entire catch-prepare-package loop right here in the USA to support American working families.
What’s the difference between albacore and chunk light tuna?
Albacore, often referred to as “chunk white”, are one of the safest fish you can eat provided they are caught in the US Pacific or Canadian Pacific since they are younger and therefore have had less time to build up high levels of mercury.  Meanwhile, “chunk light” tuna is a blend of different species that often include meat from high-mercury bigeye tuna, along with less contaminated yellow fin.  Therefore, it’s best to avoid “chunk light tuna.  Instead, stock up on troll-caught albacore like Sea Fare Pacific’s that are safe to eat and loaded with nutrients. Check out this link from the Monterey Bay Aquarium that lists Albacore tuna caught in the US Pacific or Canadian Pacific as the “Best Choice”:
http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/SeafoodWatch/web/sfw_factsheet.aspx?gid=74
Where can I buy your tuna?
We are currently in production stage with our wild-caught albacore tuna products in a pouch, with plans to release our first shipments to several stores in 30 days. We will have complete details on where you can buy Sea Fare Pacific on our website and on our Facebook and Twitter pages. If you have a store, and would be interested in carrying our product, just let us know!
Is your tuna more expensive?
Yes, but we are confident that you will agree that our superior nutritional value, gourmet quality and fresh taste make Sea Fare Pacific well worth the price. Unlike most other commercial tuna brands sold in the grocery stores that are “twice cooked” with added water, soy and vegetable broth, our 100% white meat tuna is hand-packed in its natural juices with no fillers or preservatives. And some of the supermarket brands contain up to 45% water, so you are also really only getting half as much meat.  We only cook top quality pacific albacore tuna at Sea Fare Pacific once to preserve all of its nutritious natural oils. We then hand fillet and hand pack our albacore in our earth-friendly pouch in Coos Bay, Oregon.
Where do you get your tuna?
We have many dedicated Albacore fishermen that troll off the pristine Oregon, Washington, and California coastlines and catch one fish at a time with a hook and line to keep the earth and ecosystem safe, and to provide the highest-quality, omega-3 packed tuna with no mercury concerns.  We only buy from select boats that handle the fish to our high standards.  We then prepare our specially selected wild-caught tuna by hand at ice-cold temperatures in Coos Bay Oregon, cooking it only once to preserve its natural oils and flavors.
Is your tuna dolphin safe?
Absolutely!  Sea Fare Pacific is committed to sustainable fishing habits. Unlike most of the popular commercial tuna brands in the supermarket, we never use the long-line fishing method or nets which often catch unwanted fish like dolphins, sharks, and turtles.  We only catch our albacore with hook and line, one at a time, which is the only way to guarantee dolphin safety and keep the entire ecosystem safe.  The bottom line is if you eat troll-caught Sea Fare Pacific albacore you will be supporting the U.S. fishing families, helping keep our oceans healthy and eating the most nutritious tuna available with no mercury concerns!  Here is a link from Oregon State University to learn more about this:
Tuna Trollers article
What’s the shelf life of your tuna in a pouch?
Our earth-friendly pouch actually keeps the tuna fresher than a can.  A third party that we independently  hired to test our product says Sea Fare Pacific has a shelf life of three years and the “best buy” indicates the date.  Keep in mind, that our wild-caught albacore could still lose some of its freshness after the “best buy” date expires depending on how long and how it was stored, but as long as the pouch is sealed it will be safe to eat.
Is your tuna pouch convenient to pack along?
We are getting rave reviews about the convenience of our fresh tuna in a pouch from lots of people on the go.  In fact, hikers, back packers, bicycle riders, fishermen, and hunters are finding that the pouch is convenient to pack along, and a high-quality source of lean protein to keep them going. Remember, you can just tear open our pouch of 100% pure and simple albacore tuna and eat it.  You don’t have to worry about draining any messy oils or water!
Is the pouch really that durable?
Yes. Our multi-layered BPA-Free pouch has been perfected over the years and is FDA-approved to be perfectly safe.  In fact, in many ways our metal foil pouch is more durable that a can, and will not dent (compromising the seal) if dropped for instance.  The technology of our earth-friendly pouch has been used for years in the military for the MRE meals.  As durable as it is, we do advise though you do not eat the tuna in the event that the pouch does get damaged.
Can the pouches be mailed for gifts?
Yes indeed!   We are sure most will agree that fresh, wild-caught pacific albacore makes a wonderful gift.  In fact, our gourmet tuna is approved to be mailed to the military overseas where cans are not allowed.
Is your tuna really 100% US processed and packed?
Absolutely!  Many of the popular commercial tuna labels in the grocery stores buy and process their tuna in foreign countries like Vietnam, Samoa, and Thailand,  but still claim to be a US product.  We take great pride in being 100% American owned and sustainable tuna company.  We line-catch our albacore off the west coast, and then package and process all of it right here in the US with American employees.
Do you offer your product in can?
We do have the ability to can our gourmet tuna as well as pouch it.  But we strongly believe that the benefits of our unprecedented earth-friendly and convenient tuna pouch far outweigh canned tuna. We were really sold on the idea when we learned that we could produce a BPA-free pouch with a low carbon footprint on the environment, while actually keeping our albacore fresher than a can.
Do you have any other flavors?
We are currently working on new flavors and will introduce at least two of them in 2012.  We work closely with the Oregon State University Seafood Lab to develop flavors that will enhance our pacific albacore’s unmatched light tuna taste.
Have your products been consumer tested?
Yes, we work hard to make sure we produce the highest quality gourmet albacore on the market.  We have numerous groups sample our products while in development, and we fund a consumer sensory test at the Food Innovation Center in Portland, Oregon.

Line-Caught Wild Albacore

Sea Fare Pacific is committed to sustainable fishing habits, which is why we only offer line-caught Albacore along U.S. shores.  This prevents over-fishing as well as the unfortunate consequences of bycatch (catching unwanted fish like dolphins and turtles).  Our line-caught Albacore come from the shores of Northern California, Oregon, and Washington.  For more information on fishing methods and why Sea Fare Pacific has chosen to sell only wild, line-caught Albacore, visit these organizations:
The Pouch
Canned tuna has been popular for more than a century—sometimes canned in mom’s kitchen, but more often purchased at the grocery store.  As popular as this container has been, we have come to realize it is taxing on resources and energy when producing.  In response, Sea Fare Pacific has chosen to package wild caught Albacore in a pouch—preserving mom’s home-canned taste with a more environmentally-friendly container.

We are often asked a couple of questions about the pouch which you may share:  1) What about the concerns with food cooked in plastic?, and 2) can the pouch be recycled?  Just like the can, the pouch is primarily a metal-based container with Aluminum foil at the center of its four layers.  Many aluminum containers are then lined with BPA, however this is not the case with the Sea Fare Pacific pouch.

The answer to the second question is “no,” the pouch cannot be recycled. But even without the ability to recycle the pouch, the pouch still leaves a significantly smaller environmental footprint than the can.  Cans require more raw material and consume more energy in transportation and storage making the benefits of the pouch far outweigh its lack of recyclability.
American Caught, Prepared, & Packaged

Albacore tuna that is caught along the shore of the United States is very different than Albacore caught in the South Pacific.  American tuna are younger, smaller, and don’t have the heavy metals in their systems like the older, larger Albacore that are more commonly caught by other brands in the South Pacific.  These fish often dwell deeper in the ocean and therefore require different catching techniques.  They are then processed overseas by cooking away much of the fish’s natural Omega3 goodness—leaving a fraction of the taste and nutrition for shipment back to the U.S.  By choosing Sea Fare Pacific, you will find a more nutritious Albacore that is free of the mercury concerns and has travelled a much shorter distance to get to your grocer’s shelf.  Plus you are supporting American fishing families when buying Sea Fare Pacific!
Grocery & Sport Pouches
Once Cooked Tuna

Most commercial tuna has been cooked twice to make processing easier, which unfortunately depletes much of the fish’s natural, nutritional value.  Our Sea Fare Pacific Albacore Tuna is prepared by hand at ice-cold temperatures before being cooked just once, preserving a home-canned fresh taste and 6 times more of the tuna’s Omega3.  So when you open this pouch you will simply find wholesome Albacore delight.
Loaded with Omega3

Once-cooked tuna naturally contains 6 times more Omega 3 as compared to national brands of Albacore or white tuna.  By preparing the fish by hand rather than cooking it to speed up the process, we are able to preserve the natural Omega3 goodness that is naturally found in tuna.  But don’t just take our word for it, you can read more here:

No Mercury Concerns
Pacific caught tuna along the U.S. coast are proven to have no mercury concerns.  Multiple studies have found this
to be true:

No Radiation Concerns
Following the devastating events in Japan in spring of 2011, concerns have been raised about radiation leaks affecting fish in general, including Albacore tuna.  Since those events were first voiced, numerous studies have found that Albacore caught along the U.S. shores is (and will continue to be) safe to eat.

Gluten Free

Seafood is naturally free of gluten, and because our flavors have simple ingredients, no gluten has been added to any of the varieties.  Our processing and packaging facility, however, is not certified.
Heart Healthy Salmon
Research has shown that salmon is one of the healthiest foods you can, and should, eat. It contains two critical omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, that your heart and brain need for optimal health, especially as you age. Sockeye salmon wild-caught off Alaskan shores is listed on Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch list as a Best Choice item for the minimal environmental impact caused by fishing for this salmon.

About Us
Welcome to Sea Fare Pacific

We are excited to offer a sustainable pouch of premium quality, Wild Pacific Albacore goodness that tastes like mom’s home-canned tuna!  Sea Fare Pacific offers four distinct flavors to draw out the naturally light and mild taste of our 100% white meat albacore:  Sea Salt, Salt-Free, Smoked, and Jalapeño.  So forget about the mess of draining oils or water, with our earth-friendly pouch, you can simply tear the seal and enjoy.

When it comes to healthy tuna, Sea Fare Pacific wins hands down compared to the vast majority of commercial tuna brands in the grocery store. Sea Fare Pacific adheres to stringent standards that support certified sustainable, Pacific Northwest fishing families. We line-catch our albacore off the pristine Oregon, Washington, and California coastlines one at a time with a hook and line to keep the earth and ecosystem safe, and to provide the highest-quality, omega-3 packed tuna with no mercury concerns.  We then prepare our specially selected, sustainably troll-caught tuna by hand at ice-cold temperatures in Coos Bay, Oregon, cooking it only once to preserve its natural oils and flavors.

Also, keep in mind that most of the other commercial brands of albacore tuna on the market are “twice cooked”, which causes the fish to lose most of its heart-healthy fats, and imported from Southeast Asia where the larger albacore tuna are much higher in mercury and lower in omega 3′s than their younger West Coast counterparts.  At Sea Fare Pacific, we take great pride in providing the superior health benefits of Wild Pacific Albacore, while keeping the entire catch-prepare-package loop right here in the USA to support American working families.

You can also feel good knowing that our albacore tuna in a pouch is better for the environment!  It was an easy decision for us to create an unprecedented environmentally-friendly pouch for tuna when we learned that we could ensure the pouches were BPA-free, they utilized less energy and resources to produce, and actually kept the tuna fresher than a can.  Our decision was a win-win-win, and we hope you think so too.

Sea Fare Pacific is the smart choice for eco-conscious and albacore tuna lovers!  It’s an easy and delicious snack or meal at home or on the go to benefit your health and taste buds alike.  Ask your grocer or local market for Sea Fare Pacific (The one that tastes like mom’s home canned tuna), and let us know what you think.  Enjoy!
